Truth Learning Center is the academic division of Flames of Truth Ministries.

Flames of Truth Ministries does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, or national/ethnic origin but we do require that you honor the religious beliefs that we teach from. If you or your child is in direct opposition to these beliefs, it will be necessary to refuse acceptance of your child or to dismiss your child if this becomes evident after we have already accepted him/her.

God has led us to establish preschool through high school classes in a home school format.  We believe there are three priorities that we must follow in all aspects of Truth Learning Center.

First - Salvation through Jesus Christ and Him alone must be the primary purpose of all we do.
          Galatians 1:3-5, 11-12
3-5 "Grace to you and peace from God our Father, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who gave Himself for our sins, that He might deliver us out of this present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father, to whom be the glory forevermore, Amen."
11-12 "For I would have you know, brethren, that the gospel which was preached by me is not according to man.  For I  neither received it from man, nor was I taught it but I received it through a revelation of Jesus Christ."

If we become the most elite school with the highest of academic and behavioral standards but fail to bring students to the saving grace and loving Lordship of Jesus Christ, then we would be worthy of nothing but shame.  Therefore, it must be our first priority that we present the gospel of Jesus Christ through all that we do.

Second - We must train students to be disciples with a servant's heart.  We must battle world forces that teach us to be all "we" can be and get everything "we" want because "we" deserve it.
          Romans 12:3
For through the grace given to me I say to every man among you not to think more highly of himself than he ought to think; but to think so as to have sound judgment, as God has alloted to each a measure of faith.

          Galatians 6:1-3
Brethren, even if a man is caught in any trespass, you who are spiritual, restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness; each one looking to yourself lest you too be tempted.  Bear one another's burdens and thus fulfill the law of Christ.  For if anyone thinks he is something when he is nothing, he deceives himself.

          Luke 14:11
For everyone who exalts himself shall be humbled and he who humbles himself shall be exalted.

God expects each of us to serve others and to put the needs of others over our own needs.  As true disciples of Jesus Christ, this is a lesson that must be demonstrated and taught every day.  Since our inception in January 2011, God has opened doors of ministry that the students have been able to be directly involved with.  With our widow's ministry the students have been able to make cards and gifts for the widows as well as go visit and bring cheer to the shut ins.  The students gave a Valentine banquet for the ladies of the Jacob Well ministries where they entertained and encouraged them as well as served them drinks and desserts.  They have been actively helping with the food pantry by stocking foods, preparing baskets and delivering food.  Even more important than all of this, the students have grown in their compassion and prayers for all of those in need.

Third - We must create an excitement for learning within all of our students.

          Proverbs 1:5
A wise man will hear and increase in learning

          Psalm 8:3-9
When I consider Thy heavens the work of Thy fingers.  The moon and the stars, which Thou hast ordained; what is man that Thou dost take thought of him?   And the son of man, that Thou dost care for him?  Yet Thou hast made him a little lower than God, and dost crown him with glory and majesty!  Thou dost make him to rule over the works of Thy hands; Thou has put all things under his feet, all sheep and oxen, and also the beasts of the field, the birds of the heavens and the fish of the sea, whatever passes through the paths of the seas.  O Lord our Lord, how majestic is Thy name in all the earth!

Students should look at the world around them and KNOW and stand in awe that the all powerful, all knowing Jehovah God created everything about it.  If they are studying language arts they should marvel at the concept of written and oral language and that God gave us the ability to communicate with each other and with Him.  When studying math students should be amazed at the very specific order and absolutes of creation.  When they study science, they should always see the handiwork of God the creator.   When they study history they should remember the movements of God throughout HIS-story from creation of our world until the present day.  Through all of this there should be an internal desire and excitement to keep learning more.

Curriculum
We use A Beka, Bob Jones Press and Alpha Omega Switched on School house.  Preschool through 3rd grade is almost entirely A Beka.  For upper elementary through high school we use A Beka for English/Grammar and for some of the history classes.  We have found that Bob Jones Press is a better curriculum for higher levels of Math and Sciences.  We use Alpha Omega Switched On Schoolhouse for some of the high school electives.

Tuition and Fees
There is an $100 registration for each student per year.  This assures that you will take and keep the spot for which you have applied.  This fee is non-refundable once paid.
The basic tuition for basic hours of group instruction is $250 per month.  If your child requires extra hours or individual tutoring, the fee will be increased based upon the extra amount of time your child requires.
Students are required to purchase all of their text books, workbooks and supplies.  The fee will depend upon the grade of the student and the materials needed to complete the courses requested.  Workbook fees average between $250 - $350.

You can contact me (Julia Fortenberry) anytime at the following email address for more information or to set up an appointment to discuss the needs of your child.

Why choose to pay for Christian education instead of accepting free public education?

I was a public school educator for nine years and took great pride in the fact that I was a "Christian" teacher.  Then one day God began to reveal to me how wrong I was and how spiritually damaging public education is to all students.

One doctrine taught in public schools that is spiritually damaging to our children is that of SELF-esteem.  On the surface it sounds great and noble.  We want our children to be strong and to believe in themselves.  We want them to "just say no" to drugs and to aspire to greatness.  However, the very critical piece that is left out is this - we are sinners and our best efforts are as filthy rags if we don't have Jesus.  The only thing that makes us worthy of existence is that God created us and loved us and sent His Son to die on a cross as a sacrifice for our sins.  Therefore, it is not "I" that should be esteemed but Jesus Christ.  When students hear the message of self-esteem for 13+ years, it is extremely more difficult for them to see their need for a Savior.  Thought becomes, "if I am great and I can do or be anything I want to be, then I don't need religion and its rules and since I am good I really don't need to be saved from anything."  Children must understand that we are all sinners loved by a God full of mercy and grace and that God and God alone is worthy of praise and honor.

Another dangerous doctrine taught in public education is that of multi-cultural-ism.  It is said that we are now living in a global society.  We hear news from around the world on a daily basis.  We can interact and find information about other countries with the click of a mouse.  According to multi-cultural-ism doctrine to do away with "hate" we must teach the children to accept all the differences of all different people groups in the world today.  In other words, it is perfectly fine to believe whatever you want.  Everyone sees "god" in their own way and that must be acceptable to all, then there will be peace on earth and no more violence and no more ignorance.
If you believe the Bible is true and you must believe all of it is true, then there are many problems with the doctrine behind multi-cultural-ism.  God does love all people and He desires that all will come to salvation.  However, you must come to salvation according to His plan through Jesus Christ.  There is no other way to salvation.  God does have absolutes in the Bible.  It doesn't matter what we "think", it matters what God's Word says.  For example - God's Word clearly states in numerous passages that homosexuality is wrong and is a sin.  God doesn't hate the person who commits the sin.  On the contrary, He deeply loves each and every person.  He loves me even though I am a sinner.  However - He expects us to confess and acknowledge our sins and TURN from our sins and seek to do His perfect will each day.  I can love someone who claims to be a homosexual just as I can love someone who is an alcoholic but I don't have to accept their sinful lifestyle as being acceptable especially not acceptable to God.  This is not based on my ideas but on the Word of God.
Also, within multi-cultural-ism is the thought that it doesn't matter what you believe about God or religion.  If all our thoughts are just different ways of "discovering god", then I can basically create god to be whatever I want.  Ultimately I become my own god as I am in charge of deciding what I want to believe is true.  For one thing, the Bible teaches that the name of God is important.  We cannot call Him whatever we want to call Him.   Yahweh, Jehovah God is God Almighty, the one and only Creator God, God of all.  He alone is worthy of our praise and obedience.  He alone provides salvation and grace and mercy to a sinful people.  There is no other name under heaven that brings salvation.  I cannot create my own ideas about God.  I must study and understand God as taught through the Bible.   The Bible is the authority on who God is and how I must relate to Him.
The one part of multi-cultural-ism that so greatly offends me is that I am ignorant if I believe fully in the Word of God and make my decisions based on the truths of the Bible.  My faith in God and His Word is not a dumb faith.  I have an intelligent faith and can teach the Bible from an intelligent point of view.  God's Word can be proven true scientifically and historically.  My complete faith in God and His infallible Word does not make me ignorant.  I praise God that He chose to reveal His wisdom to me and to open my eyes to see Him more clearly.

A third doctrine that directly attacks the Word of God is that of evolution.  When evolutionary theory is taught as fact and images and ideas are presented over and over, we begin to believe those ideas are factual.  If you believe in the evolutionary theories, then you cannot believe completely in the Word of God. You will begin to doubt sections of the Bible.  Once doubt enters for one thing, you will begin to doubt other things in the Bible.
Let's look at a couple of examples and think through the theory and fact.
               1.  Big bang theory states that there was matter floating in space then there was a cataclysmic explosion and the pieces developed into planets and earth's position to the sun made it produce life.  My one and only question for this theory is where did the matter come from.  Scientific law states that matter cannot be created or destroyed so where did the matter come from before it exploded?  There is no answer for this.
               2.  Let's consider the evolutionary thinking of ape to man.  Everyone has seen the progression pictures of apes becoming man.  One of the strongest keys  to the development of this pictures was the discovery they named "Lucy".  Lucy was an archaeological find that supposedly proved that apes evolved into man.  However, what they don't tell you is that this discovery was a bone.  They didn't find hair or fur or an entire body form, only a bone.  From that bone they determined in their mind what it must have looked like and now they expect everyone to believe their idea - not knowledge - just idea.
Students must be taught to think critically from a Biblical worldview in order to find the truth of the Bible.

Another doctrine that even the best "Christian" teacher in public school teaches is that we can and must compartmentalize God.  This is the one thing today that brings me the most shame for the damage I did to the students I taught in public school.  we are to teach God's Word to our children "when we sit, when we lie down, when we walk along the way...".  I took great pride in the fact that I had my students say the blessing every day before lunch.  I presented the Christmas story and the Easter story each year.  I had my Bible on my desk and they saw me reading it.  Wow! I did a great job or so I thought at the time.  When God revealed how wrong I was it broke my heart.  You see, I didn't teach them that every thought, word and action must be a reflection of God in us.  I didn't teach them to depend on God to understand lessons and to give wisdom  for daily assignments and tests.  I didn't teach them that the Holy Spirit is present with us 100% of the time.  What I did teach them was that we could put God aside when it was not time for Him and that we could bring Him out only when we wanted to on special occasions or for a specific purpose.

Why choose Christian, Biblically based education over government led public education?  To give our children the sure foundation of the Word of God and to help them develop an intelligent faith that they can use to defend God's Word.  Also, to train them to trust in God for every thought, word and action and to be obedient to His Word and His ways and not to fall captive to the ways of the world.  Our children's souls and eternity depend on our decisions.   They are worth every sacrifice and every criticism and every battle we must face.  If we are going to be obedient to the whole Word of God, God demands that we educate our children under His laws and His commands.  We have no option except to be obedient to Him no matter what the cost.
